My computer came with Windows 8. I was disappointed, because 8 looked really stupid. No more start menu, the introduction of the Windows App Store on desktops (cause that's exactly where you want easy access to questionable software sources), the weird compatibility issues, and the nearly impossible to decipher "User Friendly" experience when I, a tech guy, just want to change a friggin setting! Sorry. Anyway, I dumped 8, formatted it clean off my computer. And because new computers do not come with installation CDs anymore (another stupid idea, but in this instance kind of a relief, actually) there would be no reinstalling 8. I originally wanted a computer with Windows 7. I was familiar with it enough to know my way around its stupid "User Friendly"-ness, and knew it would be compatible with EVERYTHING I needed. Unfortunately, tech support for folks who are not fans of 8 is a joke. Called Microsoft, and they said manufacturers provide a Windows 7 installation for those truly unhappy with 8. Called my computer's manufacturer, and they said no. So I installed Linux, and told the folks at Gateway that I'd advise everyone I could to avoid their products. Avoid Gateway products, they have horrible outsourced customer service, and charge you for providing actual technical support. Apparently, that's not something you should expect from a computer manufacturer anymore. Anyway, I rolled with Ubuntu 13 for a week, then switched over to Linux Mint 16, which is AWESOME!!! But, alas, there is just some things that are easier if you have Windows. Like gaming. So, I got my tax return, and decided I would find a Windows 7 installation for my computer, or die trying. Thankfully, things didn't get nearly that intense, and I was able to find this little beauty right here on Amazon after about three minutes of moderately dedicated searching. Still not sure what's "Ultimate" about it, but the installation has been a breeze. Zero compatibility issues with my existing hardware. Even upgraded the video card after the installation, and it all played nice together. There is only one thing left to do, and that's install Mint along side it, but I pre-partitioned my hard drive, and do not foresee it being much of an issue. I suggest this version of Windows over 8 not just any day, but literally everyday. All the good stuff in 8 was already right here with none of the really dumb decisions. Start Menu? Down in the left corner where it should be. Questionable App Store of Really Sketchy Programs that can be installed with a single click? Gone. I actually have to find my software on the internet, and accidentally read who made it, or find myself on a developer's website that looks like a bad 90s Geocities page before I get anywhere near a download button, and even then I still have to double click it to install. So many chances to turn back before the scamware makes off with my credit card information. You don't have that with Windows 8. You click the wrong Facebook app (twelve of which are just labelled "Facebook" with no indication of which one is the "official made by guys who work for Facebook and get paid by them" app), and you may as well format your computer. Remember what I said about "No installation CDs" anymore? So you format your computer (or try some stupid "Refresh your Computer" option, which not only sounds dumb, but seriously, is highly unlikely to rid you of any problem that a good antivirus program can't fix), and now what? That's right. You're screwed. Do what I did. Buy a real disk, and not for a crappy operating system. Get this one. It works, its reliable, and if all else fails, you have a CD you can reinstall from.
